Paris, January 22, 2003 |

| To
mark the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, the CNRS has reaffirmed
its agreements with German research organizations and has made official
this commitment through a cooperation agreement entered into today with
the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft. The agreement was signed on January 22, 2003, by Dr. Geneviève Berger, Director General of the CNRS, and Dr. Walter Kröll, President of the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft, one of the three main German research organizations. This organization covers all areas of basic research activities and finalized research in pure science. The purpose of this agreement is to set up jointly-run research projects, including explicit clauses for the protection and licensing of intellectual property. Collaborations have been ongoing with IN2P3 (the Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics Department) of the CNRS since 1983. The objective of this agreement is to expand collaborations to other scientific departments, for example, in the field of cancer research and research on the environment. In addition to agreements with the Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG) Institutes and German universities through the Deutsche Forschung Gemeinschaft (DFG), this new cooperation agreement makes it possible, among other things, to pursue and develop the joint utilization of large Franco-German facilities in centers belonging to the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft. The agreement covers a period of four years. Contact,
